BILL STEED'S GG GOLF REPORT COLUMBUS
SEPT 29. 30, OCT 1st

"Fifteen GG met in Columbus in late September, to continue the tradition of playing the grand game of golf. We had participation from Coast to Coast, but primarily from the Midwest. The players were: Andrews, Apple, Birchler, Butler, Buchannan, Feldhaus, Jones, Kahlenbeck, Leasure, Munt, Steed, Ster, Schumann, Toth, and Vickers. On the first day we played Otter Creek in occasional rain very similar to Dallas two years ago. The group preferred to play a scrambles format, and inspite of the weather we finished without too much difficulty. Dinner that night was at the Peter's Bay Rest. in downtown Columbus, preceeded by a few drinks to loosen everyone up after golf. The group decided NOT TO PLAY THE NUMBERS GAME but divided the check evenly. I didn't record the winning foursome for the day, but did list the dollar winnings for everyone. The next day we played Harrison Lake in bright sunshine and pleasant temperature. The game was a one best ball foursome, and like the previous day everyone kicked in $5. Again the winning team wasn't recorded, but the dollar winnings were added to the previous day to get a cumulative total. At that point Buchanann and Kahlenbeck were leading with a total of $10, followed closley by Leasure with $9. Dinner that night was in the Board Room at Harrison Lake and the check was evenly divided, as it was the night before. On the next day, Friday, Andrews, Buchannan, Birchler, and Ster had to drop out due to other commitments, so we ended up two foursomes and a threesome, with everyone again kicking in $5. To even up the opportunity for the threesome we agreed to give them a 'spinner' (extra man) to be chosen by chance at the end of the two best ball foursome. We played that day at the new course "Timbergate", and since Andrews, Buchannan, Birchler, and Ster didn t play, they lost any chance of of being the overall winner and having their name added to the KEN CARPENTER TROPHY. In the snack shop of Timbergate after golf we totaled up all scores and paid off the winning foursome and totaled up everyone's winnings for three days. The 1999 winner was Paul Kahlenbeck with $19 followed by Dick Apple with $18.50, Frank Leasure with $16. Dick Apple presented the trophy to Paul, and we all got together for a group photo using a digitel camera borrowed from the pro shop. The quality of the photo left a lot to be desired. We took another picture at Harrison Lake, which was a lot better.
