Margaret Ann Mattern was born in Geinsheim Germany, a town near and to the left of Darmstadt in Hesse-Darmstadt.  Her son George indicated he lived in Hesse-Darmstadt Germany.  Her birth location is shown as a red ballon in the map above.  This is also the location where she was married to Thomas Schneider on 29 January 1828.

No one has been able to locate a record of this family's arrival to the United States.

Margaret's husband Thomas died on 14 October 1847 in Germany according to one researcher of this family.  If so, Margaret likely came to the U.S. with her children between that date and the date of the U.S. 1950 Census which was taken in Baltimore on 14 August 1850.

Margaret is listed in the U.S. 1950 Census in Baltimore Ward 3 living with her son George (age 12), her son John (age 16), and her daughter Margaret (age 8).  Their last name is listed in the census as "Snyder".

Margaret's daughter, Anna Elizabeth Schneider, is living in Ward 2 Baltimore in the 1850 census .  She was married to Bernhardt Heinrich Bosse on 29 June 1840 according to Kathy Niedergeses, a fellow researcher.  He is listed in the 1950 census as "Barney Bush" and she is listed as Elizabeth.  His occupation of "cooper" agrees with the occupation in his obituary.  The ages listed for them agrees with their known ages.

The 1860 Federal Census taken 19 June 1860 shows Margaret and George living in Clifton, Green County, OH in house number 438.  Again their last name is "Snyder".  Green County is next door to Clark County where George signed his naturalization papers in October of 1960.

The same 1860 Clifton census shows Benjamin Bosse residing near Margaret in house number 442 along with his wife Elizabeth along with clildren Barbary (10), John (8), Margaret (7), Elizabeth (4), and George (2).  Their last name is listed as "Bebose".
